The Loaf is a family run business specializing in sourdough breads of all kinds, French pastries and a wide selection of cakes. We baking gluten free bread, pastries and cakes. The business has recently expanded into a range of cow's milk and associated products; goat's milk dairy products, fresh and smoked trout's, gluten free pizza bases, Natural Chutneys and Worcester sauce from the Cape. We also have a range of Spelt Flour pasta, Balsamic beads, Mine salt.
Founding member, Alain Algrain, has been passionately engaged with the culinary arts for over five decades. Having been trained in his hometown of Brussels to become a master of European methods and techniques, today he is considered a true expert of his craft, with a passion that has cemented the foundation of their business today. Daughter Yannick Algrain has learned the skills of the trade from her father and specialises in cake decoration. Their breads are made the traditional way, with natural ingredients; stone-ground flour, charcoal-filtered water, salt, natural yeast and time. No industrial yeast, chemicals, flavouring or preservative are added at any stage. The Loaf prides itself on sourcing locally produced raw materials as far as is possible. All their baked products are made with stone-ground flour by Eureka Mills in the Western Cape.
The Loaf seamlessly incorporates old-world techniques of bread, pastry and cake making with cutting-edge modern flavour combinations into their repertoire, as well as drawing on European and South African favourites to create a bakery as diverse as the rainbow nation itself.
