Market History: It all started in 1976
It was back in 1976 that motorists on Bryanston Drive in northern Johannesburg first noticed strange happenings at the Michael Mount Waldorf School. Every Thursday morning, a group of women garbed in long frocks and straw hats gathered around several bakkies and cars with open boots. Intrigued, a few of the drivers stopped and became the first customers of the modern movement towards healthy living! Word soon spread that the ladies were selling farm fresh vegetables, organically grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides and from these humble beginnings South Africa’s first and best open air market began.
Soon the little area under the trees became too small so the ‘farm stall’ moved to a new place on the property. It was then joined by craftsmen and women selling their quality hand made goods. With the ongoing support of the teachers and parents of Michael Mount Waldorf School, an organic village market was established where friends could meet and enjoy wholesome food in a congenial atmosphere.
Thirty-three years later, and after a couple of name changes, the Bryanston Organic
& Natural Market is a leading light in the organic movement. We continue to promote products and activities that aid the healing of the earth and its people. We provide an holistic, supportive environment for organic farmers, artists, crafters and musicians to earn a living and express their talents.
